Disability Support Services

Our Mission

Disability Support Services (DSS) removes institutional barriers, facilitates adjustments, fosters self-advocacy, and ensures access to programs, facilities, and activities for students with disabilities.

Our Vision

Disability Support Services advocates for an inclusive campus that supports the full participation of all students. DSS strives to provide the tools, resources, and support to the campus in order for students with disabilities to be independent decision makers and self-advocates for their own future. We support a community of belonging in which students with disabilities are valued and encouraged to contribute.

Disability Support Services FAQs

Do I need to self-disclose my disability at Peace?

Disclosure of a disability is voluntary. Self-disclosure of your disability to DSS is one of the first steps in the accommodation request process.

How do I know if I should request accommodations?

If you have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity such as walking, sleeping, eating, breathing, concentrating, self-care, learning, or performing manual tasks, you may need accommodations for equal access to the activities and benefits of Peace.

If you received accommodations or services through an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan, you may choose to request accommodations at Peace. Academic accommodations do not automatically transfer when students begin attending college. Students will need to formally register with DSS to start the new request for accommodations.

When may I start the accommodation request process with Disability Support Services?

Deposited students may start the accommodation request process after they receive their student identification number and Peace email address.

Will the accommodation request process be confidential?

All information submitted to DSS related to the diagnosis, documentation, or accommodation request will remain confidential unless the student provides written consent.

If I need academic, dining, housing, or other adjustments (accommodations) at Peace, what will I do?
  1. Contact Disability Support Services by emailing disability@peace.edu or calling 919-508-2393 to inquire about the process. DSS will send you a self-disclosure form to complete.
  2. You will provide documentation of your disability and need for the requested adjustments to DSS.
  3. You will meet with DSS in an interactive session and discuss the impact of your disability on campus and reasonable adjustments necessary for campus access.
  4. When necessary, a plan for accommodations will be developed and provided to you. DSS will indicate your responsibilities related to the communication and implementation of the accommodation plan.
What are the differences between accommodations or services in high school and accommodations in college?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and amendments (2008), with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973), require colleges and universities to make reasonable accommodations to allow students with disabilities full participation in the same programs and activities available to students without disabilities. The K-12 laws ensure success. The laws that apply in college ensure equal access; the ADA is comprehensive civil rights legislation that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Its purpose is to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

Accommodations in college may or may not be similar to ones the student received in high school. Some accommodations that promoted success in high school (such as modified assignments) may not be appropriate in college. Accommodations that create equal access (such as extended testing time) may be authorized, but may be implemented differently than when the student was in high school.
