The Intern Effect: Hugo Fiscal-Martinez Adds to His Toolkit
As a marketing student at William Peace University, Hugo Fiscal-Martinez was a frequent face on campus. He served as chief financial officer for the Student Government Association, a peer mentor and orientation leader for the First Year Experience, and founding president of the Latino Student Union. Embarking on his last year of college, he wasn’t ready to stop there — he also wanted to get involved off campus.
Fiscal-Martinez applied for a marketing internship at Clancy & Theys Construction Company, the business behind some of Raleigh’s most recognizable structures such as the Nature Research Center and The Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral. Already interested in content creation, branding and strategic storytelling, he wanted an experience that would allow him to explore these areas and learn new skills to match.
The internship went far beyond his initial expectations. Fiscal-Martinez quickly started adding to his own toolkit as he gained greater experience with the Adobe Creative Cloud, learned how to leverage social media algorithms and crafted precise, on-brand marketing materials. Just like construction, he found that marketing requires careful attention to detail.
What began as a part-time internship turned into a full-time position. Upon Fiscal-Martinez’s graduation from WPU in spring 2020, he joined Clancy & Theys as a temporary marketing associate. Soon after, that role became permanent. He now works for the company’s headquarters in Raleigh and focuses on content creation, social media management, proposal work and various company initiatives.
His advice to college students?
“Truly seek those internships sooner … Do not be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone — you never know how much more you can learn and take away from an experience, including the incredible mentors [you will meet] along the way.”
Internships make it easier to build a network of contacts and find fulfilling work in the professional world. Fiscal-Martinez recommends being eager to learn new skills, building an impressive resume and continually seeking new opportunities.
Fiscal-Martinez is passionate about helping companies tell their stories in the most genuine way possible. Combining the tools he gained at WPU and Clancy & Theys, he is ready to build a meaningful and enduring career.
