On behalf of the Commitment to Community Taskforce, I am excited to announce a new series of events we will be hosting to bring our campus together in Courageous Campus Conversations.
As we approach 2020 Election Day and beyond, we may find ourselves having difficult conversations with students, colleagues, and community members. Talking with others about sensitive topics is rarely easy, but avoiding those difficult conversations doesn’t help. The Courageous Campus Conversation Series will offer a simple, sociable, and structured way to practice communicating across differences while building understanding and relationships across campus. Our goal is to help us connect with each other, to be problem solvers, focusing on learning and sharing rather than debating or convincing. These conversations will last between 60-90 minutes and require participation from all attendees. No preparation is needed to participate, though background links regarding the topic will be shared in advance.
These conversations will be taking place over the next several weeks on various topics for students, faculty, and staff. Our first conversations will begin next week and are specifically designed for faculty and staff.
Courageous Campus Conversations: Communicating with Care
How do we communicate with each other and our students with care? We want to communicate with others in such a way that we gain or share knowledge and bridge divides, but those conversations don’t always come naturally. In this conversation, we will explore what communication strategies work and what doesn’t. We will reflect on ways to improve our interactions with others, self-evaluate our communication skills, and discuss words and actions that shut down healthy dialogue when discussing divisive issues.
