Raleigh, NC [July 28, 2020]  The USA South Athletic Conference announced today that the conference Presidents unanimously voted to postpone conference competition and championships for fall sports through the end of 2020 due to continuing health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

From the USA South, “With the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, and athletics staff as their priority, the Presidents of the USA South Athletic Conference have voted unanimously to postpone all fall sport conference competition until the spring 2021 semester. The sports impacted are football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s cross country, and women’s cross country. This decision was made in light of several factors, including the recent rise in positive COVID-19 cases throughout the USA South’s geographical footprint. Other major factors include the availability, cost, and feasibility of adequate and consistent testing for student-athletes.”

While WPU will not compete in USA South sponsored competition, the University is committed to focusing on promoting athletics with the best interests of the Pacer student-athletes at its core. The university will develop a plan consistent with CDC, NCAA, state and local recommendations in order to return to competition as soon as it is deemed safe. The USA South stated, “Any games played against outside competition during the fall semester will not be scheduled by the USA South and will not be considered ‘conference’ contests.” The USA South added that, “It is the intention of the USA South to formulate plans to play as many contests as feasible for the sports mentioned above within the spring semester and conduct championship competition.”  All University decisions regarding competition and practices will be made with the physical and emotional health of the student-athletes as its priority.

President Ralph stated, “Moving the conference competition schedule to the Spring Semester is the right decision for our students, coaches, and athletics staff. I am confident that Pacer Athletics will provide an exceptional Fall Semester experience for our students. Our Pacers are resilient and agile – I am certain they will adjust to this new “flipped” schedule while pursuing their academic and athletic goals.” The University is also committed to continuing with training, conditioning, and practices within these athletic programs throughout the Fall semester, utilizing the best practices and protocols laid out by state and local officials as well as the CDC, NCAA and the USA South Athletic Conference. The William Peace University athletic department plans to return to competition as soon as it is deemed safe by state and local guidelines.

From Athletic Director Tom Curle, “I look forward to our students’ arrival on campus.  I have the utmost confidence that WPU will continue to provide a creative, positive and productive athletic environment on campus as we prepare for spring conference competition. These are challenging times but the Pacer Family will find a way to come out on top. Go Pacers!”

The William Peace University athletics staff will continue to focus on providing our student-athletes with the best experiences and opportunities that we can this fall as we look forward to a return to athletic competition as soon as possible. We will continue to keep all students updated as we work towards returning to competition.
