Commencement Day FAQs

What time does Main Lawn open?

Class of 2020: Main Lawn will open on Friday, May 7th at 3:00 p.m.  Seats are limited.

Class of 2021: Main Lawn will open on Saturday, May 8th at 7:00 a.m. Seats are limited.

Will refreshments be provided?

Complimentary water will be available in various locations around the Lawn.  Breakfast items and coffee will be available for purchase at the Library.

Where do graduating students line up for the processional?

Graduates should assemble in full ironed regalia (cap and gown, tassel and hood) no later than one hour prior to the ceremony in Dinwiddie Chapel, Main Building.

Does the University make accommodations for guests with disabilities?

Yes. Special Needs parking spaces will be available in the 15 East Peace street Main parking lot. Please contact the Office of Disability Services for these special requests:

Where am I allowed to park on campus on Commencement Day?

On-Campus parking will be limited and on a first come, first serve basis.  Most guests will be directed to City of Raleigh parking lots on S. Salisbury Street.  Shuttle service is available from the city lots to campus. Parking in Seaboard Station is prohibited.

How long is the Commencement ceremony?

Commencement exercises last approximately two hours.

Will there be a professional photographing graduates on stage?

A professional from Photo Specialties will photograph each graduate as he or she crosses the stage during commencement. Photo Specialties will send free color proofs and ordering instructions to each graduate’s email and permanent mailing address.  Please note that it could take 6 – 8 weeks to receive your proofs from Photo Specialists. If graduates do not receive this link or need additional information about ordering photos, they should contact Photo Specialties at or 919.967.9576.

Can guests bring cameras? 

Yes, but for their safety and for the courtesy of others, guests may not take photos from the platform. There will be a designated photo zone near the stage for guests. Please do not obstruct the view of other guests.

Will there be a live stream of Commencement?

For guests who are unable to attend Commencement, or who are unable to find seating due to overflow, you can view WPU’s video live stream, which will be available in multiple on-campus locations, as well as remotely through your desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile device.
