A student body deserves to have someone lead with their best interests in mind, someone who will make necessary changes to help everyone thrive and enjoy their college experience. We sat down with Peace Student Government and Programming Association (SGPA) President Alyssa Poteat to find out who she is and what she plans on doing for the 24-25 school year.
Q: Why did you get involved with the SGPA?
A: During my sophomore year, I was visiting our annual Purpose at Peace event when I came across the SGPA table. I was encouraged by the people at the table to sign up and start to advocate for my peers as the Sophomore class representative. I had always had an interest in student government, so I decided to apply so that I could advocate for those who cannot.
Q: What are SGPA’s plans for 24-25?
A: We have a couple of initiatives going on and events planned. Obviously, I don’t want to reveal the events as I don’t want to spoil the surprise!
Our advocacy Branch is currently working on a couple of initiatives. The biggest one is budget transparency, which is run by our chief financial administrative officer, Cora Rebert. She is meeting with the appropriate people to see if we can share the Peace Budget with the student body.
One of the initiatives I am working on Is finding ways to make our Senior Leadership Team known around campus. I’m starting by planning lunches between our student government and the senior leadership team and then branching out from there.
Q: What event or activity are you most looking forward to this year?
A: My favorite event that SGPA puts on is our Red Rose Ball in the spring. I always love the different themes and love it when people dress up according to the themes!
Q: Are you working on making any changes on campus? If so, what?
A: Each year the student body president gets campus improvement funds in their budget. Currently, I am trying to gauge what the student body needs and planning ahead for when I use those funds in the spring. I highly recommend showing out to one of our town halls so your feedback can be heard!
Q: What is one change or event you are most proud of?
A: There are a lot of things that the Student Government and Programming Association has done to better Peace’s student experience. One change that I’m really proud of is the implementation of the menstrual products around campus. I have heard lots of good feedback about that, and how students are loving these products!
Q: When you leave, how do you want to be remembered?
A: Time really does fly when you are in college. I can’t believe I’m already a senior. It feels like yesterday I was just finishing up my first day of class as a first year. I want to leave SGPA with more structure and guidance for the next board.
As for my own personal legacy, I want people to remember that hard work always pays off, and to fight for what you believe in.
